Un grande amico ci ha lasciati

I waited for two weeks to write this post. I’ve never experienced the pain that I have for the death of such an important friend, and so close to me and similar for many reasons.
He hailed from New York like me. And he loved Medieval art history so much that he made it his profession. He was ironic and sarcastic like me, but modest when it came to his own skills and other things.

Picture taken at my birthday party on October 27th. He had come from Florence with Antonio, saying “Sally, I wouldn’t miss your birthday party for anything in the world.” I couldn’t believe it, and kept asking him, “Really? Are you sure?” “Yes, certainly, I’m 100% sure!” Five days later he died of a heart attack.

Ero incredula,  continuavo a chiedergli : " Ma dici davvero"?

A photo he called “Pickles Amore mio” ( Pickles My love). Knowing how much he liked pickles, I made enough to be able to give him a few jars as soon as I saw him. So that is what happened on October 27th, he got 3 jars. And just five days later he passed away. The day after I gave him the pickles he took this photo and wrote:
I’m in pickle heaven thanks to Sally!

I'm in pickle heaven thanks to Sally!

Our history is short: I met Eugene through a closed facebook page: Italian Reflections which is a page just for native English speakers who live most of the year in Italy. This was three years ago and our friendship was still going strong. We shared every pain, worry, joy, joke, advice, bit of gossip, interest and culture on the chat.

Eugene Martinez was a native New Yorker and holds a degree in art history and graphic design from New York University. His love affair with Italy began in 1980 when he moved to Rome as a freelance textile designer leaving the frantic life of Madison Avenue ad agencies and graphic design firms behind. His passion for art, food, and history led him to make the Chianti hills his home, where he specializes in conducting personal tours of Florence, Tuscany and surrounding areas. As an official authorized fine arts guide, Eugene was a fully qualified and licensed professional. With gentle humor he told riveting stories about the real tales behind the art, history and traditions of Italy. He led one-of-a-kind personal private art tours and workshops for individuals and small groups. Along with the Ars Opulenta team he endeavored to bring the opulent culture of Italian life to visitors from all over the world.

Eugene and his partner Antonio Alfani, wrote a wonderful book of recipes, being Antonio  a great chef. "Tales from the table" ; a story of family love and traditions handed down from generation to generation around the dining table of this grand Italian family. Two hundred years of stories and recipes for you to taste and enjoy.

Anyone who knew Eugene as a friend, tour guide or as a brother like me, knows that his death has been a great loss, and despite the fact that he lives on in our hearts, he leaves a gap which cannot be filled in our daily lives.
